Lady In Red – Capilla del Pocito, Mexico City

It is believed that the Virgin Mary appeared four times on what is now the site of the Basilica of Our Lady of Guadalupe in Mexico City. It is the most visited Catholic shrine in the Americas.

The Capilla del Pocito was built on the site of what is believed to be her fourth appearance. Built in the 18th century the chapel represents some of the finest Baroque Mexican architecture.

Some of the world’s greatest architecture was built in the name of religion-temples, mosques, shrines and cathedrals. It’s easy to appreciate regardless of religious orientation or lack there of.

I don’t know the significance of the woman’s red clothing and wonder if she is a religious pilgrim or nun. If any of my readers do please let me know in the comments.

What is your favorite religious architecture?

I don't know the significance, but when I was in high school I wrote my senior thesis on Islamic architecture in Spain... probably my favourite religious architecture. Or maybe Gaudi's cathedral? The shrine is beautiful, though!

Also no idea on the lady in red, Wendy, but how lucky you were to have her just happen to be there at the time to add that icing to the cake.

I particularly like the expansive view of the first image, and would love to see it larger. I was hoping that you might have it on your gallery site, but didn't find it there.

To answer your question, I was entranced by temple architecture in Thailand and Japan during time spent there. I also love the small white painted churches in the Andes altiplano in the north of Chile.

Andrew, I was very lucky. I plan to add the wide angle image to my portfolio which I need to update.
